Today my parents came back from 5 weeks traveling through Indonesia. They had a superb time. There is one thing that always amazes me and that's the fact that our Dutch mentality with regards to prices is applicable in all economies. What I mean is that I listened to stories about day to day life and the decisions not to buy something that was perceived as too expensive or out of the normal price range. It's strange since everything is 20x less expensive in Indonesia. It's interesting to see that our value perception of for example a taxi ride is different here than there. Is that because we value the Indonesian people less or is it just unaware behavior? A taxi ride in Amsterdam starts at EURO 7,50 (110,000 IDR) and it will take you just a few kilometers. Spending that same amount in Indonesia for a ride of 10x the distance is perceived a too expensive. Thinking about the bottom billion I think one of the solutions lies in applying the same value perception across the globe. Yes life during travel will be more expensive, but people providing services to you will have a better income and won't have to hassle you all the time. Or is it just like with free music to tempting to pay nothing or a lot less just because thats the way things are?
