Leading UK music industry event In The City has agreed to a deal with Apple to promote fresh British talent through iTunes. Founded in 1992 by Yvette Livesey and Factory Records' Anthony Wilson, In The City has emerged as a major international music business meet-up. As part of its programming, the show heavily promotes new acts, 54 of which have been selected by a panel of music industry insiders to be showcased during the event, at live shows, and now on iTunes. Apple will host songs by each of the selected bands through iTunes UK beginning today. Songs will cost 79 pence ($1.42) each, and will also be available as an album collection.
The deal is just one of several different ways bands and digital services are experimenting. Most recently, Depeche Mode and iTunes in the US engaged in a promotional deal that gave fans advance access to gig tickets when they bought music. And major artists are all attempting to broaden into new digital formats, with traditional outlets like terrestrial radio and music video rotation often part of a much larger campaign get the word out.
