Xingtone a ringtone

Britney_2 >> Xingtone a company offering software to create your own ringtone from music files on your computer. I have a problem with this. Why? Because again commercial products are offered to work with music created by people that don't get paid for this. It's quite a good product though ;-) Since artists are the first ones that get paid less because of changes in the industry, they will need more products to make money with. Why does nobody looks at the music business from the perspective of the music makers? It's all about technology, business models, creating idols etc.  The picture on the left is just eye candy and has nothing to do with this article. This initiative is not about creating a new business model around new technologies, it's about helping musicians to make some money of their work in a networked world with a lot of mother F%$"* caling the shots today. Viva!

High Court hears Grokster case

Attorneys for the entertainment industry and file-sharing companies square off in a pivotal intellectual property case.

March 29, 2005

WASHINGTON

– Justices on the U.S. Supreme Court struggled on Tuesday over how to adapt a landmark legal standard to cover the activities of file-sharing companies as they heard long-awaited arguments in MGM v. Grokster.

The justices appeared concerned that the legal test proposed by the entertainment industry would chill the development of innovative technologies like Apple Computer’s iPod music player. But they did not appear copasetic with arguments made by the file-sharing companies that the justices should leave untouched the Supreme Court’s 1984 decision in Sony v. Universal City Studios.

MGM v. Grokster is about copyright law and whether file-sharing companies should be held liable for the copyright infringement of their users. Grokster is a small company that won its case in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the case is shaping into a fight over

Hollywood

’s investment in artistic creation versus engineers’ freedom to innovate.

Looks like Hyundai is getting ready too

HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA IS THE FIRST AUTOMAKER TO ADD STANDARD XM SATELLITE RADIO TO ITS FULL VEHICLE LINEUP

Washington D.C., March 23, 2005 -- Hyundai Motor America and XM Satellite Radio today announced that Hyundai will be the first automaker to launch XM as standard, factory-installed equipment in every vehicle across its entire model line-up.

Starting in 2006, XM radios will be factory-installed in all Hyundai models, beginning with the all-new Sonata, Santa Fe, Elantra, and the upcoming replacement for the XG350 premium sedan. By year-end 2006, 75% of Hyundai's sales volume will be XM-equipped, with the remaining models following quickly thereafter, totaling well over 500,000 units by 2007.

"XM is the leading satellite radio provider, and our unique partnership establishes Hyundai as the industry leader in the application of standard satellite entertainment and data systems," said Robert Cosmai, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. "Just as we've done in achieving our position as an industry-leader in value, quality, and standard safety features, here again we are setting a new benchmark as the first automaker to launch standard XM satellite radio across our complete model line-up." >> XM Radio

Things start to change

Canada Considers File-Swap Crackdown

>> Globe Technology The Canadian government has recently proposed several amendments to its copyright laws which would "clarify that the unauthorized posting or the peer-to-peer file-sharing of material on the Internet will constitute an infringement of copyright."  Currently, Canada is one of the more liberal countries where it is not illegal to upload material to P2P programs like Kazaa and BearShare.  Apparently, the reforms would also make it a crime to remove or circumvent copyright protections on CDs too...In pre-committee meetings the copyright amendments were approved by all political parties. >> Billboard Postplay

Once upon a time there was a gang of thieves. They went at night to a shop and via the back-door they entered the building. Evey time the shop owner called the Police the Police was searching for a Submarine. The thieves told the shopowner to pay them to close the back-door. The shop owner and we all are confused.
